Below is a description of a few changes the NETC Board would like to make to our organization’s bylaws. Please read and vote!
Psst!! While you’re at it, don’t forget to nominate your peers for board positions, for awards, and for the NETC Hall of Fame!
3.03 – Duration of Membership
- Now that NETC has established a number of member benefits not available to non-members, we felt we needed to clarify the exact dates that membership started and stopped. We say “the NETC membership year begins at the time that membership is purchased and generally continues through July 31 of the following calendar year.”

4.01 – Board Members
- We reviewed the way that our bylaws describes NETC board positions. Our biggest change was to make Membership Manager an official board position.
- We also clarified that 1890 and 1994 representatives are not considered “regional.” The way we had previously written the bylaws, it appeared as though only people from so-called 1862 institutions could run for the NC, NE, S, and W regional rep positions. We re-wrote the bylaws to clarify that anyone regardless of when the school was granted land (1862, 1890, or 1994) can run for a regional representative position.
- We added language to indicate which positions had voting privilege. (Conference reps do not.)
- We added language to indicate what positions were elected. (All but conference reps.)

4.03 – Terms and Elections
- We reviewed our ideal election schedule. We added a phrase (“Ideally, elections will be held as follows…”) to address the fact that we often don’t stick to the schedule. It varies from year to year!
- We made a small technical change to clarify that “general elections” in which anyone can vote are used for all officers of the board, not just VP Elect, Treasurer, and Secretary.
- We added: “In the event that fewer than 2 candidates run for a given position, the board reserves the right to hand-select and vote on that position, provided that the board communicates the process and decision to membership.”
- We clarified that voting for representatives should be from the represented institutions, both for regional and 1890/1994 reps.

4.05 – Meetings
- We added our intention to disclose which meetings are open or closed and for how and if meeting notes would be distributed. For both of these items, the Board sees these goals as works in progress. We are getting there!

4.06 – Voting During Meetings
- We clarified what meetings membership can attend and which they cannot.
